Canary Islands > Tenerife > Los Gigantes
Los Gigantes, SO different from the noisy and crowded Las Americas. The tranquil village of Los Gigantes snuggles in a peaceful, secluded valley. There is no through road, no rowdy hoardes of youngsters out to get smashed, no endless machines blaring out their mindless racket day and night, no 'kiss me quick' hats - just friendly people enjoying a gentle pace of life in a glorious setting. This is one of the most tranquil and exclusive areas of the island of Tenerife.
The village has been built around the traditional style plaza with the beautiful church at its heart. The church boasts an interesting selection of bronze sculptures with a dramatic painting over the altar. This plaza is the hub of the village. Take time out and enjoy a glass of local wine or a coffee and just watch the world go by. If you're lucky the local 'parakeetas' will put on an aerial display for you in one of the large leafy trees.
There are stunning views across the bay to the island of La Gomera which rises majestically from the twinkling ocean like some romantic fairy castle. . Relax with a chilled glass of excellent local vino at sunset and feast your eyes on the spectacular free show as the sun plops into the sea coating the island and water in golden light. The magnificent Los Gigantes cliffs soar away down the coast beyond the village harbour helping create a sheltered year-round climate and a haven for sea birds..
Loads of places to visit/things to do (if you can prize yourself away from the swimming pool!):
Boat trips from Los Gigantes harbour take you out to watch dolphins and whales playing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Reasonably priced - I prefer the smaller boats as you get closer to the dolphins. I could hear the baby dolphin breathing as it was swimming alongside us. Not ashamed to admit it made me cry!! You can enjoy swimming in the crystal clear waters of the bay as they make the pick up at Masca. |

'What's on??' ........There’s tennis, swimming in the heated pools and bowls within El Marques Palace itself but slightly further afield there is, golf on glorious courses, scuba diving, hiking in the hills or down the twisting cliff path to Masca Bay (Heidi's Hikes) and boat trips from little Los Gigantes harbour to visit the whales and dolphins which are to be found playing a little further out to sea – a memorable sight.
The island of Tenerife is one of incredible variety. It offers dramatic scenery with majestic Mount Teide presiding over the island in snow-capped glory (highest mountain in Spain) in the centre of the island (just three quarters of an hour by road from the apartment to the amazing landscape at the base). Then there are the remote mountain villages with a wonderful Alpine feel where dainty flowers carpet green meadows. Rugged ravines run down to the sea, a splendid testimony to the volcanic presence (thankfully not seen for some years).
The coastline is skimmed with magnificent cliffs, such as seen in Los Gigantes and sandy beaches either clothed in the famous black sand or the, more common, golden variety. There are day trips to the mysterious island of La Gomera. Listen out for the famous whistling language! The fascinating pyramids at Guimar are also worth a visit. So there you are, you have it all - from hiking to history, swimming to snoozing, whale-watching to wandering, whatever you do the warm sea-salty breezes will caress you and add to your enjoyment. By the way the apartment is air conditioned but as one wall of the lounge is patio doors it never gets stuffy and we’ve rarely had to use it.
El Marques Palace is set in a gloriously elevated position with a walk down the sweeping hill into the village of Los Gigantes (for those less able on their pins it costs approximately three Euros each way by one of the excellent local taxis). Alternately, there is a dramatic walk along the rugged coast which takes you into the heart of the village. There is also a sea water pool cut into the rocks here – for the more adventurous!
There is crazy golf in the village – fun for the children and adults too! The little church in the centre of Los Gigantes has a thriving and friendly congregation. They will welcome you in and often hold boot and book sales in the village – a good way to make new friends. The C of E service, in English, is at 6 p.m. every Sunday.
To Eat Out - or ‘at home’ that is the question?
We’ve enjoyed many al fresco breakfasts on the balcony and simple picnic lunches of local cheese and huge locally grown tomatoes drizzled with olive oil and crispy 'panos' most days (although you can just pop down the road for a ‘full English’ if you prefer) then worked up an appetite during the day for a delicious meal in one of the restaurants in the evening.
There’s something for everyone: from traditional Spanish fare at El Meson (dine with romantic views of the sun setting over the sea or the island of La Gomera – just watch you don't stick your fork in your ear if distracted), or English nosh (we had a very good roast dinner last time we were there), sizzling steaks or chicken, freshly caught fish (landed in Puerto Santiago bay over which juts another popular choice of ours, ‘The Fisherman’s Inn – very good food at good prices), gazpacho, salads, French, Indian, Chinese, Italian (Terry’s favourite spaghetti marinara with mussels and prawns) paella, pizza, Mexican . El Marques Palace often organise barbeques at the poolside bar in the evening. This bar is great for snacks and drinks by the way if you can’t be bothered to potter back upstairs to your apartment for lunch.
However, if we’re just feeling lazy we eat ‘at home’ - it's so easy to cook at home as the kitchen is SO well equipped and then we might wander down to the village plaza for coffee and a scrummy dessert or ice cream and often enjoy one of the musical entertainments which are fun for all the family and great value for just the price of a drink!
There is a supermarket 2 minutes walk from the apartment which sells local delicacies (bananas and tomatoes grown just up the hill) with good fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables whilst at the same time catering for the more English tastes (cornflakes and baked beans!) and the little bakery across the road sells hot bread and long rolls “panos” from early in the morning. The scent of fresh baking that wafts in the air is wonderful - just follow your nose!
Which reminds me take a walking tour through the Masca Gorge and you can return to Los Gigantes by boat. Bird watchers paradise.
Lorro Park i(sort of outdoor jungly zoo but set in super scenery) s a fantastic day out for the youngsters, as is the giant water park - our boys loved it!!
Mount Teide is really worth visiting - the highest peak in Spain. Watch out for your breakfast on the cable car! And do wear warm clothes if you go to the top otherwise you could find yourself walking through snow and ice in your shorts and T shirt!! The drive up through the beautiful forests with amazing, dizzying (in places), panoramic views is incredible.
The Pyramids at Guima are fascinating - I will have to visit again. If you like history you'll LOVE this. The island of Tenerife is one of incredible variety. It offers dramatic scenery with majestic Mount Teide presiding over the island in snow-capped glory (our apartment is only 3/4 of an hour drive to base of Mount Teide). Something for everyone: from swimming to sunbathing, history to hiking a fabulous place for a holiday!
We LOVE our apartment, which is designed to be a home from home, and we also love the Los Gigantes area, and so do our guests, many of whom return again and again. Here’s just a few of the lovely unsolicited testimonials we have received:
"........ a fantastic week in Los Gigantes and 312 El Marques Palace. Everything was absolutely wonderful and the apartment so very comfortable. It was very hot .......the evenings were heavenly, first the sunset and then the moon and the stars....... certainly my idea of heaven."
"......Dear Terry and Felicity, Thank you for our stay in your beautiful apartment, 312 Marques Palace in Tenerife. We really enjoyed it. The weather was wonderful (we went to the Arena beach) and our children played in the waves. We enjoyed watching BBC which was a nice fresh chance to watch quality TV instead of the Dutch commercial stations! The apartment was so luxury and well equipped, I felt like a princess! Unfortunately we did not have the chance to watch the dolphins, hopefully next year. We did go to La Gomera and that was a worthwhile trip. I think that the Los Gigantes area is far the most beautiful part of Tenerife and it was just a dream to be there. The people at the reception and the cleaning ladies were very kind and helpful. Well, you probably notice I am a bit sentimental and regret that the holiday is over.........." Mrs. A - Holland.
"....Just wanted to let you know that we really enjoyed our holiday at your apartment, 312 El Marques Palace. The apartment was great, spotless and had everything anyone could need (including juicer that we used daily!!). We had a lovely relaxing time and ate far too much in a different restaurant every night!!!"
".....Another superb week, and I can honestly say that I have never returned from holiday feeling so relaxed and refreshed.People are starting to recognise us in the restaurants, etc., now as 'old timers'."
"......I had the greatest difficulty getting Luke and Carlie on to the plane, they wanted to stay at El Marques Palace much longer. All I can say is, thank you and hopefully we will be able to visit again, maybe next year." Alan R,
"......Thanks for 312. We had a great couple of weeks. The apartment is perfect." Jim Q,
"......We had an absolutely fantastic time at The Palace! Very relaxing and great weather too. People, food, service all lived up to expectations. Jo's mum and dad really enjoyed themselves and want to go back" Irf and Jo L,
Do please call us as we are very happy to help you to plan your well-deserved, relaxing holiday in our apartment!
