Spain > Andalucia (Costa del Sol) > Costa del Sol > Malaga > Comares
At 1700 feet above sea level, North East of Malaga, and close to the Montes de Malaga Natural park, Casa Los Petates enjoys an elevated position providing breathtaking panoramic views over the surrounding valleys, villages and mountain ranges of the Axarquia. Situated in the "campo" (countryside) between the white villages of COMARES and COLMENAR, (an uncomplicated 45 minute drive from Malaga airport - no dirt tracks)! this traditional Spanish cortijo nestles on the outskirts of the sleepy spanish hamlet of El Romo, here, the friendly locals still farm the land, harvesting olives and almonds, mules are still used for ploughing and goartherds roam the verges.
Our two local villages, Colmenar and Comares have between them, a range of facilities, including mini markets, butcher shops, banks with cash points, chemists, medical centre, tapa bars and restaurants. More comprehensive facilities - from hypermarkets to dry cleaners - can be found at nearby Torre del Mar, however, visiting your nearest village can be an experience in itself, and will certainly give you the opportunity to practise your Spanish and meet the locals!
With Granada and the Alhambra Palace, Ronda, Seville and ski-ing at the sierra Nevada all within reasonable travelling distance, there's plenty to do. There are also several natural/National parks, lakes and hot springs nearby, and the area is inspirational for artists, writers, birdwatching and botany.
MORE ABOUT COLMENAR
The capital of the montes de malaga, Colmenar sits 700 metres above sea level. Most of it’s industry revolves around farming, harvesting olives and almonds, and livestock. It’s not uncommon to meet shepherds with their goats (and sometimes sheep) on your travels, and mules are still a valuable commodity for ploughing and carrying.
Its name derives from the word Colmena meaning beehive and the town is famous for its locally produced honey. With a population of less than 4000 it has a friendly village atmosphere, sleepy for most of the time but, typically, a little livelier later on in the evening - particularly at weekends.
This small but elegant town is a mix of ancient and slightly newer architecture. Dominated by the 17th century church of nuestra senora de la asuncion, it’s older narrow, steep and windy streets clearly betray a former Arab influence.
MORE ABOUT COMARES
Perched on a rocky escarpment 740 metres above sea level, Comares is a well known, frequently visited, much loved, pueblo blanco! Dating from medieval times, and reputed to be one of the last moorish strongholds- remains of an old moorish fortress still exist – this is an ancient village with typically steep and narrow streets- most inaccessable by car. Follow the ceramic footprints along the pathways thoughtfully designed to lead you to more places of interest, and wherever you look the views are stunning!
(Don’t forget the 16th century church of nuestra senora de la encarnacion while you’re there).
