Borgo Santa Maria in Valle is on the left bank of the Arno river(18 km from Arezzo) near the ancient Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Valle, the origins of which date back to the late Middle Ages. A few kilometres from the house is the ancient hamlet of Laterina with its perfectly preserved town centre and ancient castle, the scene of fierce battles fought between the Municipality of Arezzo and the Florentine Republic. the farmhouse is located on the slopes of one of the many hills which make up the foothills of the high peaks of Pratomagno and which at this point gently descend towards Arno river. Shoppping is easy, 3 km from the houses there is the small village of Laterina, where you will find small nice foos shops, but if you prefer the supermarkets there is one in Levane, and a biggger one in Montevarchi, only 20 minutes away. There are also many open markets that take place on different week days. The upper Valdarno, a long valley bordered from East by the Pratomagno massif and from West by the hills around Siena. The Casentino, in the province of Arezzo, formed by the upper course of the river until the confluence with the Maestro della Chiana channel. The Val di Chiana, a plain dried in the 18th century, which, until the 18th century, was a marshy area tributary of the Tiber. Casentino is the valley in which the first tract of the river Arno flows till Subbiano. It is one of the four valleys in which the Province of Arezzo is divided. Mount Falterona, from which the Arno starts, represents the northern boundary between the Casentino and Romagna. On the east of the valley are the Alpe di Serra and the Alpe di Catenaia, which separate the Casentino from the highest tract of the Val Tiberina. On the west there is the Pratomagno, which separates the valley from the Valdarno Superiore. Part of the valley is included in the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona, Campigna National Park. It can be said that the valley has an oval form, with an extension across the river that varies from a maximum of 60 km to a minimum of 30. The topography of the Casentino is especially various, including both plains and mountains rich in large forests. These mountains have often attracted great saints: it was here that St. Romuald built his hermitages at Camaldoli, and that less than two centuries later St. Francis of Assisi established the Sanctuary of La Verna, the headquarters of the Franciscan order. The valley's biggest comuni are all located in the Arno valley: among these the biggest are Bibbiena and Poppi, while Capolona, Castel Focognano, Castel San Niccolò, Pratovecchio, Stia, Subbiano are more or less smaller. The villages located on the neighbouring hills and mountains are much smaller. These are Chitignano, Chiusi della Verna, Montemignaio, Ortignano-Raggiolo and Talla.
