Spain > Catalonia (Costa Brava) > Costa Brava > Begur > Girona
Extract from The Sunday Times Travel section, 9 March 2008, listing Aiguafreda as one of the top ten beaches in the world!
“My favourite beach is called Cala d’Aiguafreda and it doesn’t have sand. It has flat rocks as warm as electric blankets and tiny rock pools that make perfect wine coolers. Wrapped in pine woods and sheltered from the tramontane wind, it smells intoxicatingly of ozone and resin and is lapped by waters as clear as Bombay Sapphire. That’s nothing special in these parts. The beaches of the Baix Emporda, as this part of the Costa Brava is known, belong in a superleague of their own; but, for my money, tiny Aiguafreda is number one. That’s due in no small part to the fabulous Hostal Sa Rascassa, located in heavenly isolation a few steps from the beach. Owned by the ebullient Oscar Gorriz, this simple, stylish place (recently voted one of Spain’s best decorated hotels) with a candlelit open-air restaurant, a beach bar and a Wednesday night music club, is a diamond set in an emerald forest beside a sapphire sea”. [Chris Haslam]
ABOUT THE AREA ~ this is the unspoilt COSTA BRAVA or CATALUNYA which is free from large Tour Operated holidays and where most of the properties are owned by Barcelonians. It is rarely overcrowded and has retained real Spanish charm without a souvenir shop in sight! This is an area you will want to return to again and again.... Every day there will be a different place of interest to visit, be it a cultural pursuit or another sun drenched sandy cove with clear water to while away the day. All the coastal resorts here have waterfront restaurants, cafes and shops and it is a real pleasure to wander the little streets around the front and enjoy the spectacular scenery that this rugged coastline offers. Development here is mainly villas as the terrain does not allow for large apartment blocks and the coastline remains intact with some wonderful coastal path walks.
There are many beautiful sandy beaches to visit, all within 10-20 minutes by car. TAMARIU to name just one is such a pretty bay with waterfront restaurants, shops and cafes. Also within 10-15 minutes are the excellent beaches and coastal villages of AIGUABLAVA, SA RIERA, CALELLA DE PALAFRUGELL and LLAFRANC.
BEGUR - This charming hillside town with its cobbled streets offers the visitor an excellent choice of Catalan restaurants, tapas bars and shops. The main square has entertainment in the high season and there are many late night bars and a couple of discos. The overall atmosphere is very Spanish with local artists` paintings and crafts displayed in the square during the summer. Every Wednesday there is a market selling fruit/veg clothes and accessories. There are excellent supermarkets, specialist fishmonger, butchers` shops and freshly baked bread available in many shops.
The old town of Begur is situated some seven hundred feet above sea level, 3 km inland and enjoys superb views over the coastline. Enjoy a gentle stroll around the cobbled streets of this romantic town which shelters at the foot of a 16th century castle. This fortified town with its preserved walls and five magnificent keeps (16th and 17th century) is built on three hills, with the castle, the town and a residential area on each, all within an outcrop standing in the Mediterranean Sea and providing the perfect area to explore over and over again.
There are five bays around Begur, all with beaches and particular attractions, each surrounded by wooded hills hiding quiet roads and beautifully located private villas and homes. The many hidden sandy coves and picturesque fishing villages are surrounded by the region's characteristic high, rugged hills. The town itself has two main squares, very good local bars and restaurants, places to sit and relax with many open all year. Concerts are frequent attractions and every summer there is regular traditional Catalan dancing – an attraction for the locals that provides a classic spectacle for you. Here you can find most facilities including banks, supermarkets and specialist food shops. The lively Wednesday morning market selling clothes, artefacts, flowers, plants and fresh produce is a big attraction for tourists and locals. |

Additional Information on the Area: There are strong Catalan and local traditions. History, arts and crafts, mixed with exclusive shops in exceptional surroundings – and all five minutes from a beach.
There is much to see and do in this region including a visit to LA BISBAL (about 12 km away) - the pottery capital of Cataluña, or the nearby fortified villages of PALS and PERATALLADA which are steeped in history and an absolute delight to visit.
Some of the most inviting towns are southeast of Girona. Calella de Palafrugell embodies the appeal of the region. The main activity here is simply soaking in the beauty of the forested cliffs hugging the beach and the rock formations jutting into the azure Mediterranean. This can be done quite nicely while sunning on the sand or sitting in a seaside cafe. Or, for those feeling more active, a 30-minute-long, cliff-top walk beside the sea provides panoramic views on the way to Llafranch, another scenic village.
A number of the villages in this region have artistic and historic as well as scenic attractions. Atop a hill and on the way to the coast is Pals, a 12th-century walled town that has won awards for its careful restoration. Tossa de Mar, another medieval settlement, is known for the dramatic defence towers guarding the old centre of town.
Residencial Begur is just on the edge of the town of Begur itself. Due to the nature of Begur’s winding streets and its situation on a hill, many local Catalans have chosen to set up residence in the large forested area of Residencial Begur. This area is good for families as many of the properties here have large fenced off grounds with pool and barbecue areas and it is still only approximately 3km from the beautiful beaches and coves the Begur area has to offer. Residencial Begur has its own swimming pool complex and tennis courts, the use of which are available for a small fee.
Slightly further south of Residencial Begur is CASA DE CAMPO, which is set in the beautiful Catalan countryside about 2km inland from Tamariu, and is an old established area where a few villas have been discreetly built amongst the pinewood hills. Ideal for those seeking complete peace and quiet in a countryside setting yet within easy striking distance of the lovely coast which is 10 minutes away by car or a 30 minute walk down a woodand path. Villas in Begur
Golf activities in the area The following 3 form the Golden Triangle of golf courses in the area of Pals including a new championship golf course built in 2000. Pals is approximately 10 mins drive from Begur.
Emporda Golf course is made up of four nine hole courses, each of which can be combined to form six different rounds of 18 holes.Considered one of the best courses in Catalonia, Emporda is also one of the PGA European Tour Qualifying Schools. Details: 27 holes. Length 6687yds Par 71-73
Pals Golf Club runs parallel with the beautiful white sands of Pals beach and is surrounded by dense green pine forests. Pals is used as one of the PGA European Tour Qualifying Schools.Details: 18 holes. Par 73. Length 6740yds.
Serres de Pals is a new championship golf course founded in the year 2000.The course is composed of three distinct areas with smooth hilltops, pine tree forests and fairways between lakes, giving a challenge to golfers of all levels. Details: 18 holes Par 72 Length 6785yd BEGUR - This charming hillside town with its cobbled streets offers the visitor an outstanding choice of Catalan restaurants, tapas bars and shops.
There are many places of interest including Salvador Dali's castle at PUBOL and his amazing museum at FIGUERES, where you cannot fail to be drawn in by his diverse art. At LA BISBAL the streets are littered with ceramic shops and there is also an antique centre. GIRONA is a wonderful small city to visit, known as mini-Barcelona, with its own charming ramblas and interesting shops and pavement restaurants. BARCELONA, if you crave city life, is one hour by train from FLACA (20mins by car from BEGUR) and here you can leave your car and get right into the centre of BARCELONA by train. The border of FRANCE is approximately one hour away but you will find all you need and more in this beautiful and charming unspoilt region of SPAIN, Costa Brava, Catalunya.
Activities and Attractions Tennis and horseriding- 15mins drive.
Beach activities, snorkeling, diving- 5min drive. The beaches in this region are superb. All sandy with blue flags and mostly a shallow entrance making it safe for little ones. There is rarely overcrowding as there is such a choice of beaches and some are relatively unknown by tourists. This area attracts many Spaniards from Barcelona and other parts of Spain, many of whom have holiday homes here.
Go-karting for kids and adults-15mins drive.
Water park- 25mins drive.
Zoo- 15mins drive
Golf- many golf courses within 10-20 mins drive. The house manual gives details of all the courses in the local vicinity.
Sailing- 15mins drive. There is a sailing club at Sa Riera and kayaks and pedallos for hire. Kayaks also at Calella.
Cultural activities- all over the region: Figueres- Dali's museum- 40mins drive Medieval towns- 15-20 mins drive- Peratallada- a must to visit.
Restaurants- too numerous to mention. Begur has a very good choice as do the coastal villages. The house manual has previous guests' comments on local restaurants.
Shops- an interesting selection of very good shops selling clothes, jewellery, etc.
Food- excellent speciality shops in Begur for fish and meat plus very good supermarkets.
Cycling- bykes can be hired in Palafrugell
Walking- this is wonderful walking country, especially out of season when it is not so hot. The tourist office has a map showing popular walks.
Skiing- within 3 hours you can be on the slopes in Andorra.
Night life- plenty if you want it but there is not a string of discos here. Mainly late night cellar bars with music, some with dancing. There is a club in Begur and one just outside, not far from the villa but well away from everything and everyone!
The main square has entertainment in the high season with a mixture of traditional and modern music and dancing. Wonderful to just sit and watch!
