Located between the Pyrennes and the Garonne river in South West France, the Gers is known by some as the new Tuscany. Restaurants and cafes are plentiful in the hilltop bastide towns and quiet villages throughout the area.
The climate is excellent with long, hot summers, which together with mild springs and autumns allow many months of enjoyment of the surrounding countryside.
Gascony if a food lover's paradise, being world famous for its cuisine - there are markets every day in one of the nearby towns. The local vineyards offer a wide variety of Gascogne wines and the more famous Armagnac, so you may find it difficult to stick to the recommended 21 units a week !
This relaxed and friendly area of France is ideal for those who just want a quiet break or who are interested in either photography, painting or walking. Cycling, horse riding and tennis are also all available locally.
An inland lake, fed by thermal springs, with a water slide and a sandy beach, is situated just 8 kms away in Castera Verduzan, a village which also boasts its own mini-golf course, tennis courts, a racetrack, a Casino and luxurious Thermal baths.
There are two 18 hole courses and one 9 hole course within half an hours drive.
If music is your thing, then there are annual festivals at Marciac (Jazz), Mirande (Country & Western) and Vic-Fezensac (Salsa). Finally, the Pyrenees are less than 3 hours away, as is the mediaeval city of Carcassonne and the Atlantic coast near Biarritz. Other interesting day trips can be taken to Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lourdes and Pau.
