Portugal > Algarve > Albufeira region

Albufeira is centrally located on the southern coast, approximately 40km from Faro. Of particular interest for their architectural features are the churches of Sant’Ana and Sao Sebastiao and the Misericordia chapel. The coastal walk along the footpath at the edge of the sea offers magnificent views over the city perched on the cliff top overlooking the beach and leads to the cave at Xorino.

Take a stroll through the old town square that boasts a number of restaurants and cafes where dining al fresco with a good glass of Portuguese wine is a must.

For the shopaholic, “Algarve Shopping” is only a short drive away featuring high street retail stores within an enclosed mall. Traditional boutiques and souvenir shops are in abundance in and around the old town.

Other leisure activities include a day out at a water park, big game fishing, a visit to zoo marine which features dolphins, seals, sharks and exotic fish to name a few. A jeep safari explores the unspoilt Algarvian landscape. Spend an unforgettable day on a sea side cruise swimming in isolated bays, exploring caves and enjoy a typical Algarvian lunch.

For the night larks why not try your hand at the casino in Vilamoura or while away the night at one of the traditional bars in the old town to British owned pub-style establishments found on the famous strip.

Additional Information

Renowned for its sunny climate and miles of golden sandy beaches with their famous rocky formations, the Algarve on Portugal’s south coast boasts an average 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. Mild all year round with hardly no rain in the summer months, Albufeira is a thriving city with tourism and leisure as its main trade. However, you will still find fishermen bringing in their catch on Praia dos Pescadores (fisherman’s beach) where they mend their nets, indifferent to the sunbathing tourists, as they have done for hundreds of years.

Algarvian restaurants cater for all tastes and there are a number of dishes to choose from, however the emphasis is on fish and shellfish. Meaty chicken and pork dishes are better choices than beef, especially the famous peri-peri chicken. Fish is best grilled on an open charcoal fire and one should not leave Portugal without trying our famously delicious grilled sardines.

Other infamous dishes include arroz de marisco (seafood rice), ameijoas na cataplana, stewed clams with pork sausages, garlic and onions and bacalhau (salted cod) which is cooked in a variety of ways. Algarvian desserts are some of the best in Europe with almonds as their main ingredient.

Restaurants serve large portions, with wine generally from Northern regions. The better reds are from the Alentejo region and vinho verde, a light white vine is a definite with seafood. For an after dinner drink try a vintage port or sweet Madeira or you may try an aguardente medronho but be warned it has a kick!

Algarve has been dealing with different cultures over the years; as a result Algarvians have a tolerant and relaxed attitude to visitors, friendly and hospitable and far less serious than the Northerners, with a relaxed attitude to timekeeping. Typical of Southerners, urgency is an alien concept and you should remain flexible when requiring assistance.

Portuguese, derived from Latin, has a nasal sound with heavy inflections making this language difficult to understand and more so to pronounce. However, English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Locals appreciate it when visitors make the effort to speak their language and are tolerant of mistakes.
