England > Devon > Topsham
Topsham is an unspoilt, historic town on the Exe Estuary just a few minutes drive from Exeter and easily accessible from the M5 (Bristol just 1.25hrs, London 3hrs, Birmingham 2.5hrs). A convenient train link comes directly into Topsham & Exeter Airport is just a few minutes drive.
A dream location for families, walkers, golfers, bird watchers, boat lovers or gourmets, there is something for everyone. Undiscovered by most, Topsham is the nearest and most beautiful estuary town when travelling from the north or east of the country.
The town of Topsham overlooks the Exe estuary and for many years was the main port of Exeter. There are numerous historical houses which reflect its wealth from its shipbuilding and commercial days. Today the town is well-served by many good small shops, pubs and restaurants. A well-supported Saturday market takes place in Matthews Hall, which is also the venue for local plays and other events. There are public tennis courts, a bowling green, and a superb open-air heated swimming pool. Topsham Museum, situated in one of the lovely houses on the Strand, is well worth a visit; it has free entry and a superb tea-room.
The Exe estuary is renowned for its birds and wildlife, and a ferry crosses the river to the footpath beside the Exeter Canal. It is possible to walk or cycle to Exeter through the Exeter Canal Country Park, or to the Turf Hotel at the entrance to the canal (a ferry makes river trips to this delightful place regularly from the Trout's Boatyard). The Exe estuary is at the edge of the western gateway to the World Heritage Site: the Jurassic Coast.
Nearby is the cathedral city of Exeter with it's fine shopping, architecture & waterside developments. A few minutes down the road you will also discover the heritage protected “Jurassic Coast” starting at Exmouth through to Budleigh Salterton and beyond, where you will find some of the cleanest beaches, clearest waters & most beautiful coastline in the UK.
Please email for our own website, more details of our cottage, the facilities and the area.
We look forward to your visit!
