Indicates location of property Portugal > Central Portugal > Pedrogao Our property, Termas da Azenha includes 7.5 hectares of beautiful grounds, of which 5 hectares are former agricultural rice growing semi-wetlands. 1.5 hectares is formed by our 'hill' Monte de Barril, which is part of one of the valley slopes. This part was used as an olive tree plantation holding a hundred olive trees. We are proud to say that these olive trees are still part of our land. Over the past decade the trees have had to miss some tender loving care and therefore we have started to prune back the trees to make them more productive. After all there is nothing much better than making your own olive oil! The remaining space is taken by the buildings, the stables, garages and the gardens. Our Termas da Azenha is situated just outside the small village of Pedrogão do Pranto at the foot of the valley slopes and within the valley of the river Pranto. The river Pranto is a tributary of the river Mondego, the main river which flows into the Atlantic Ocean a few miles further down the valley. As we are situated on the boundary of forest and water we do have two ecosystems holding a very rich mixture of flora and fauna. This area alone is home to around 300 species of birds, a lot of remarkable birds are easy to spot and visit our wetlands frequently; blue kingfisher, heron, stork and flamingo. There is a great variety of pine, fruit and foliage trees. The rivers and estuaries around our bath house are filled with all sorts of fish, river lobster, shrimp and frogs. We also spot foxes, rabbits, hares and bats. The area in the valley is often used for fishing and hunting. The area is very well suited for day walks, bike rides and horse riding. The vicinity of the beautiful Atlantic coast, Figueira da Foz and the quiet beaches of Lavos and Leirosa make it a perfect place for nature and sun lovers who come to seek clean air and time for themselves. The medicinal water from our springs is therefore an extra attraction. Although the bathhouse has not properly been used for the last 10 years before we settled in, we still daily welcome local guests; some of them come from far, to take home a few litres of water or soak themselves in one of our healing baths filled with spring water. This region is not only well suited for nature lovers, guests who come to soak up some of Portugal's finest culture find themselves surrounded by lots of opportunities to explore. Coimbra, the city of universities is only 25 miles away. The excavations of the ancient Roman stronghold of Conimbriga are a mere 16 miles away. The famous pilgrimage city of Fatima, the monastery of Batalha, the former castle in Buçaco and the Thermal baths of Curia and Luso are less than one hour away by car.

Children arrangement We have a special treat for parents with young children, because to have children is a beautiful thing, but sometimes rather tiring. We have a notion of the needs of young parents, we still remember very well the weariness, in spite of the enthusiasm and the love and care you feel for this wonderful, playful, energetic little creature or creatures. We created an opportunity for you to rest and relax, together with your youngsters. We have converted the patio to an adventurous play ground for the little ones, with an shallow swimming pool (40 cm water), a sand-box, a place to play with clay. There are ropes to climb in, a swing, some old cellars to play hide-and-seek or some fantasy game ...... and it is completely safe, surrounded by walls and closed by a gate. The parents can be in the sun or in the shadow, reading a book, taking a nap or whatever they feel like, the children will amuse themselves. Of course, it depends of the age of the children. This patio is best for children from 2 to 6 years old. In the apartment we put a special bed, a high chair, a little bathtub, a special device for the toilet. Part of the service is the change of sheets whenever necessary (your darling could have a small accident at night ....) We have a diner service. You can use all your meals with us, of course, but you also can have it in the apartment. If you dine with us on our terrace, we have a high chair ready for you. You can rent bicycles or a car with a child seat. We have a lot of lovely day trips to river beaches, little lakes or castles to enjoy. Part of the arrangement is tickets for "Portugal dos Pequenitos" - a very nice museum in Coimbra with all styles of houses in Portugal and in the former colonies. Your kids can go in and out of the houses and will have a wonderful time! (open from June till September). We can provide a babysitter if you would like to go out together, for example to the casino in Figueira da Foz or a fado-night in Coimbra, or a romantic stroll at a moonlit beach. In Portugal, the weather is very smooth till the end of October, when the summer really ends. The winter only lasts about 3 months: December till February.
