With all the advantages of the beautiful Breton countryside and within easy reach (35 to 45 minutes) of the many wonderful sandy beaches of Southern Brittany or the stunning lakes of inland Brittany. From the hamlet of Le Crann (meaning “crown” of a hill) it is an easy 1 km walk (or bike ride) to the small village of St Yves Bubry, with its traditional French bar and small shop for those small essential groceries. The church of St Yves Bubry, completed in 1589, is noteworthy for its blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. St Yves has its own delightful and relaxing restaurant down by the old mill with its tranquil lake and water-wheel, perfect for relaxing and unwinding at the end of a day or after a long drive.

For a wider choice of shops, restaurants, petrol stations and groceries, there is the charming village of Bubry (10 minutes away) with its beautiful summer floral displays, the delightful market town of Baud (20 minutes away), Napoleonic Pontivy (25 to 30 minutes away) and Lanaster & Lorient (30 minutes).

Le Crann is situated in the commune of Quistinic, which is host to the 16th century village of Poul Fetan, immaculately restored to show life at that time. In high season you can dine at the village auberge and afterwards see demonstrations of everyday life from this period. For those intrepid walkers, there is approximately a 5 km walk to the village from Le Crann. The commune of Quistinic and the Blavet Valley are a paradise for walkers and cyclists alike. The owners have details of many published walks, cycle routes and riding trails for those who are keen to explore. If you want to step further back in time, outside the village of Melrand (15 minutes away)is the Village de l’An Mil, a 1000 year old reconstructed medieval village.

Or spend an afternoon walking or cycling along the River Blavet (5 minutes away), with a leisurely stop at the various bars, cafes and restaurants along the way. Or spend a moment to watch the boats come through the lock and the cyclists ride by.

Close by there are many historic towns and castles to visit including Hennebont, Auray, Pontivy, Vannes and Josselin.

The Bretons pride themselves on their warm welcome and hold many local festivals at which you will be joyfully included. There is hardly a week that goes by without some festival in the region. Lorient, just 30 minutes away, hosts the delightful 10 day InterCeltique music festival around the buzzing yacht harbour. Every year, both Josselin and Hennebont hold an annual medieval festival. Many local and international regattas take place at the yachting haven of Trinite sur Mer.

Local markets abound almost every day of the week where there is an ample local produce to sample. France is not France without a local “brocante” – if you wish to hunt down that French antique bargain, contact the owners for information on where you can find the latest bric-a-brac fair or market.

Morbihan is renowned for its megalithic stones with so many special places to visit; Carnac with its 3000 standing stones a must see, but also those at Locmariquer, Petit Mont or even catch a boat to the island of Gavrinis.

And if that’s not enough, the region has plenty of museums, zoos, and parks. Art lovers can follow the “Art in the Chapel” exhibitions throughout the summer for a tour of the Blavet River chapels.

For a lazy day, take a cruise down the River Blavet, or further afield there are many boat trips to the off shore islands and around the beautiful inland sea of the Gulf du Morbihan, where you can stop off on some of the larger islands for lunch, a walk and even a cycle.

What a fantastic place, 4 of us stayed in October and we had great weather due to the area having its own micro climate, we even got a tan. The setting for this large cottage is perfect, the gardens were spacious with heated pools. The property was very clean, well maintained and the kitchen was like a home from home it was so well equipped. We took lovely walks around the hamlet and we found so much of interest to see in and around the area, thanks to the help of the owners Sue and Steve. They were so interested in what we liked and their knowledgable of the area ensured we had a great time. We asked for their recommendations for eating out and all of the choices were excellant - great Creperies. We will certainly be returning.

2008 September Wisteria Cottage Review

Thank you so much for our wonderful stay at your 'restful rural retreat'. Wisteria Cottage really was a 'home from home' for both families and we couldn't have asked for anything else (very clean, extremely well maintained gardens and acres of lawns with two heated swimming pools and we eat out each night using the BBQ). Your daily suggestions for days out were so incredibly helpful and came up trumps each time - local knowledge made our holiday very easy and carefree. The cottage had all the amenities that any family could wish for dishwasher, showers, washing machines, - superb. We will be coming back to see you soon and have recommended you to other friends and families. Once again, first class, thank you.
