Renowned for its sunny beaches, sleepy afternoons and delicious cuisine, Spain is also home to some dramatic mountain ranges, clean sandy beaches Villajoyosa is the historic and administrative capital of the Marina Baixa. Its economy depended on both inshore and ocean-going fishing. Villajoyosa has 3,5 kilometres of beaches, notably the Centro, where the famous Moorish disembarkation is held at the end of July, and El Paradis. These are the best, although there are others, like Xarco which has a watch-tower, or the one called Torres which has a the added attraction of the Roman funeral tower of Hercules. One small bay, called Racó de Conill, is used for underwater swimming and nudist bathing. The transparent waters of Bol Nou and Caleta are also noteworthy.

The relationship with the sea has marked its history and culture, since maritime commerce with overseas countries brought about the development of its other main industry: chocolate making. Villajoyosa has kept many of its charms, such as the afternoon fish auctions. The brightly coloured facades of the houses originated in the need for the sailors to see their houses from far off. The old, walled town is worth seeing and walking round.
