France > Poitou-Charentes > Deux-Sevres > Prahecq
The beautiful village of Celles sur Belle with its superb abbey is only 10 minutes away. The town of Melle (15 minutes) which has an excellent market, also boasts silver mines which date from the 5th to 10th centuries. Silver from these mines were used by the Frankish kings to mint their coins. Around the village are also many walks where a huge variety of flowers and fauna is displayed.
Chize forrest and zoo (20 Minutes) has more walks as well as a zoo with 600 plus animals including bison, wolves wild boar and reptiles.
Lac de Lambon (15 minutes) is a large inland lake with beach, watersport facilities, children's play area, restaurant and again many walks.
The Marais Potevin (Green Venice) is about a 30 minute drive and there are 150,000 acres of fenland, canals and meadows created by monks in the thirteenth century. Boats and cycles can be hired to explore the maze of quiet waterways and the many marsh villages with their traditional white cottages.
Further afield (45 minutes) is La Rochelle and the beaches of the Ile de Re. The town itself has a magnificent harbour guarded by two medieval towers symbolising the town's rich history. There are many quayside restaurants, bars and markets and the narrow backstreets have a multitude of shops. La Rochelle also boasts one of the best aquariums in Europe.
Within an hour is Futuroscope, a theme park of the moving image, and the city of Poitiers which offers lovers of art and architecture a rare choice of fine buildings to admire. The medieval districts in the heart of the city have much to admire and there are many pavement cafes and a bustling market.
The area of Cognac is about an hours drive and here there are tours of the many distilleries including Remy Martin and Hennessy. The town itself ia the birthplace of Francois 1.
As well as all of these there is the town of Saintes (with its Roman origins, particularly its amphitheatre), important to pilgrims through the ages, the beaches of Royan where oysters are regularly collected and a little further afield the vineyards of Bordeaux and le Puy de Fou, where in the grounds of an ancient chateau historical pageants are acted out. |
