Vila Real de Santo António is situated in Eastern Algarve on the banks of the River Guadiana, facing Spain.
Vila Real de Santo António is architecturally like nowhere else in the Algarve. It was rebuilt by the Marquês de Pombal in 1774 along a grid system; the town features a perfectly rectangular street pattern reminiscent of Lisbon´s downtown Baixa district . The main square - The Praça Marquês de Pombal - is surrounded by oranges trees and elegant 18th century town houses.
Nearby, about 3 kms, is the beautiful beach of Monte Gordo, one of the finest along the southern coast of Portugal.
A short drive to north, just 3 kms, is Castro Marim, dominated by its massive hilltop castle built by King Afonso III in 13th century.
Not far away from Vila Real de Santo António, about 24 kms, you have Tavira and Ria Formosa Natural Reserve Park where you can discover the world of fauna and flora that lives in this part of Eastern Algarve coast.

Close to the historic town of Castro Marim you have the beautiful Golf Course of Castro Marim
In front of Vila Real de Santo António, the other side of River Guadiana, you have Ayamonte (Spain). You can go there by ferry or by car and, once in Ayamonte, you willenjoy wandering around this beautiful little town with its many shops, cafes, bars and restaurants including "Tapas Bars" |
