It’s hard to suggest which sight you cannot give up visiting in Rione Monti, believe us. But we try, including not only the most famous monuments, but also evidences of early Christianity and of Middle Age. Moreover, a visit to the Tourist Office (via dei Fori Imperiali) a few minute walk from via dei Capocci could help you:
1. Coliseum and Constantine’s Arch; 2. Imperial Forums (Emperors Caesar Augustus, Nerva, Vespasian and Trajan) 3. Torre delle Milizie and Mercati Traianei (Trajan’s Market), with entrance from via Quattro Novembre; 4. Domus Area ((Emperor Nero’s Palace), with entrance from Colle Oppio; 5. San Pietro in Vincoli Church, very close to via Capocci: the entrance is from via Cavour, upstairs via di Monte Polacco. Inside the church, Pope Julius the Second’s tomb by Michelangelo, with the Moses statue; 6. Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, a few minute walk from via Capocci, via Panisperna side; 7. San Martino ai Monti, the most ancient Church in Rione Monti: also very close to via Capocci, via G. Lanza side: it dates back to the sixth century;
Torre dei Capocci (Capocci’s Tower), in the same square of San Martino ai Monti: it ‘s 36 m. high, but unfortunately you cannot visit it;
Santa Prassede Church, in the street with the same name, close to Santa Maria Maggiore square; inside, wonderful mosaics date back to the nineth centur
Santa Pudenziana Church , n. 160 via Urbana, a parallel street to via Capocci: inside a mosaic dates back to fourth century;
In a few steps from Coliseum to San Giovanni in Laterano Basilica (all inside Rione Monti), we suggest to visit San Clemente Basilica (11), fascinating architectonic complex with three levels, mitreo, the Basilica, below (fourth century), the upper Basilica (twelfth century), and also Santo Stefano Rotondo Church (12) the first church in Italy to be built with a round plan (fifth century).
Ouside Rione Monti, but any case close to via Capocci, there are Capitol Hill with Musei Capitolini, the square by Michelangelo and Santa Maria Aracoeli Church; the archaeological area of Palatine Hill, Celio Hill, the Circo Massimo, the Emperor Caracalla’s thermae; also Trevi Fountain is a few minute walk far. This not exhaustive list makes it possible for you to go back home – n. 10, via Capocci – to rest a bit before leaving again.
If you do not love to walk so much, catch the electric minibus n. 117 from via del Boschetto stop: on week-day every ten minutes it connects San Giovanni in Laterano Basilica to piazza del Popolo with a circular line including piazza di Spagna, via del Corso, piazza Venezia, via dei Fori Imperiali, Coliseum. Call 800431784 (ATAC, public transport) for every information about weekly tickets, reductions and so on. |
