France > Aquitaine > Dordogne > Monpazier
Location
The medieval village of Monpazier can be quickly and easily reached and is one of the best preserved bastides in the region with lots of restaurants and bars, small shops, banks, and a glass blowing exhibition/workshop.
The Dordogne river offers canoeing, walking, swimming and boat trips. The fantastic views, villages and places of interest offer the artist perfect opportunities to pursue their passion. There are many village meals/fetes held in the area and night markets at several towns and villages weekly which offer a night of eating, drinking and making merry. These usually carry on late into the night.
If you feel a need for more serious shopping during your stay, Bergerac and Villeneuve-sur-Lot are within 30-40 minutes in opposite directions. The ancient town of Bergerac on the Dordogne River where boat trips can be taken. Villeneuve sur Lot is, as the name suggests, on the River Lot in the Lot and Garonne and is on the route to Agen. There are markets in many towns and villages including Issigeac on Sunday mornings, which is very popular and Villeneuve on several days of the week.
The Dordogne is one of the gastronomic centres of France, famous for its foie gras, duck, truffles and mushrooms. Restaurants are reasonably priced, most using traditional recipes. The area is also famous for its wine. The world famous vineyards of St Emilion, Monbazillac and Cahors are close by and the wines are superb.
There are pageants held locally showing how life was in medieval times and there are many beautiful chateaux and gardens all along the Dordogne Valley. Other bastide towns such as Villefranche du Perigord and Beaumont, and fortified churches are waiting for you to visit.
Caves and many other attractions are to be found all along the Dordogne and Vezere valleys, including Lascaux and Padirac. This area is known as the Birthplace of Art.
Further afield, at Agen, is Parc Walibee. This is a themed adventure park for young and old alike, with both gentle rides and the more hair-raising. You can take a picnic or eat in the park from one of the many stands/restaurants.
The area has activities for everyone.
