Italy > Sicily > Castellammare Del Golfo
A paradise for all who love the sea.
Castellammare - “Castle on the sea” on N:W: coast is famous for its unspoilt natural beauty of majestic mountains sweeping down to the sea, sandy beaches, coves, rocks. The picturesque port in the bay is dominated by the 17 th century Aragonese castle. The fishing harbour moors local fishermens boats and holiday makers boat club. Restaurants, pubs, discos along harbour walk are open till late and offer fresh fish and local specialities. Castellammare is a bustling town but has retained its own identity while still catering for visitors. Walks through its characteristic streets, or along fortifying walls or down steps leading to port are fascinating.
Food? Delicious!
Sicilians are rightly proud of their cuisine, fish is common on all menus. Pesce spada (sword fish) is usually grilled and Pasta con le sarde (pasta, sardines, pine nuts, fennel, raisins, safron) is a favourite.
Cous cous is a speciality in Trapani region as are almond cakes, ice-cream and granita (crushed flavoured ice with alcohol poured over the top). The original recipe from the nuns in the convent at Erice is still used to bake almond cakes and biscuits. The sweet “cassata” (ricotta, almond, marzipan liquor-soaked sponge, candied fruit) is a typical example of Arab influence in Sicilian cuisine.
Something for everyone at Castellammare
The long, soft, sandy beach is well equipped in summer to cater for kiddies –paddling pool, games, amusement park and café. Teenagers can play beach volley or follow keep-fit group or dance step on beach as sun goes down. Adults can relax on sun beds in lido or hire a pedal boat.
Walks
Everywhere around town, along beaches, in forest park or in nature reserve Lo Zingaro where walks are marked out. |

The house is on corner of a narrow side street and a street of wide steps down to the harbour. The entrances and balconies are onto each street too so views are varied-street, rooftops, mountains and sea. There are four floors each with two windows and a door onto stone-staircase. Rooms all have balconies so house is bright and airy. The property is independent and quiet, 19th century stonework and some original maiolic flooring make it unique. Visitors say they love the homely atmosphere and can relax in comfort. They enjoy breakfast on the terrace or a pizza and beer in the evening under the stars.
