France > Aquitaine > Dordogne > Cales
"Les Rosiers" is set on a hillside overlooking the small quiet village of Calès, high above a great oxbow bend in the River Dordogne. Calès lies on the border of the Périgord Noir, between the small towns of Lalinde on the Dordogne, and Le Bugue in the valley of the River Vézère. It is close to two other villages well-known to tourists: Trémolat, with its watersports, abbey church and restaurants, and Limeuil, spectacularly situated at the confluence of the Dordogne and the Vézère.
Access
By air: Calès is half an hour's drive from Bergerac airport (see map below). There are frequent Ryanair flights from Stansted (daily), Liverpool and Nottingham and Flybe flights from Southampton, Birmingham and Bristol. Car hire is available at the airport, but visitors can be met if required.
By road: Calès is about 8 hours' continuous driving from the Channel ports, slightly less from Cherbourg. Most of this will be on autoroutes (motorways with a speed limit of 80 mph and frequent service areas), so it is quite possible to drive from the Channel in a single day.
By train: From London: Eurostar to Paris, TGV to Bordeaux, then a local train up the Dordogne valley to Trémolat. |
