France > Western Loire > Loire-Atlantique > Guemene Penfoa
Les Grand Chenes is situated on a hill top on the edge of a farming hamlet, 5 kms from the nearest town. Guemene Penfao has 2 supermarkets, banks, hairdressers and of course, bakers. The area was known as the country of the three rivers, Vilaine, Cher and Don. All three are pretty and offer walks and bike rides and canoe trips. Local hippodromes with trotting races. A wide choice of restaurants in the area. There is a large market on Mondays at Redon the nearest large town and Guemene has a smaller version on Fridays.
The Loire Atlantique still has a strong Breton flavour. The roads are tollfree and the pace of life is calming. Beaches are about an hours drive away, with La Baule offering a long wide sandy beach. Roche Bernard (50 mins away) is a pretty river port, and further along the river is the Barrage at Arzal, watch the boats in the lock. Further along the river is the coastal town of Penisten, a popular holiday resort.
There are many little towns that are famed for their floral displays and artisans shops. La Gacilly, Rochfort en Terre, to name but two. The chateau at Josselin rises from the river side and protects the village. The pretty walled town of Guerande is set in the salt marshes near the coast. Events: July 14 National Day - Fireworks and entertainement outdoors in all local towns. Beginning Aug: Celtique Dance and Music Festival in GP. Last weekend Aug Jazz Festival - Nantes. All are free to view. The nearest port from UK is St Malo (1.5hrs), and Cherbourg, Caen and Le Havre are about 3 hours drive and serviced by Brittany Ferries and LD Ferries. Air travel is very accessible in the area with Rennes(40ks), Dinard (115ks) and Nantes (55ks). |

We are pleased to be able to offer guests the opportunity to 'eat in', choose from our varied menu and the meal is prepared by us ready for you to eat: where possible using fruits and vegetables from the garden. Has proved a very popular extra for the past 2 years! Ease into your holiday with a ready made meal. A selection of bikes is available for client's use, mostly adult sizes.
We provide not only bedding linen and towels but also provide toilet rolls and soap dispensers for hand washing for each shower room, 2 new shower cubicles have just been installed. In the kitchen we provide tablets for the washing machine and dishwasher, washing up liquid and cleaning materials. Also basic cooking items such as oil, vinegar, flour etc. Tea towels and small kitchen hand towel provided. We have travel cot, high chair, baby bath, and safety gates for babies. If you are thinking of flying then we are able to provide a 'stroller' for toddlers.
The basic provisions of sugar, salt and pepper, oil for cooking are provided. Don't forget that we grow some herbs just outside the door - chives, parsley, ,mint, sage, bay and rosemary. Plenty of local attractions to suit all tastes and ages - fun ride parks for the 'young' - car museum - good walks - canoes for hire locally - golf courses - horse riding - good shopping! - City or Country there is plenty to see and do within an hour's drive.
The house has been restored from a somewhat ruinous state and we have preserved many of the original features, the massive oak beams, exposed stone walls and original oak doors. The salon, once a stable housing up to three horses is a large airy space with comfortable seating for 7, has TV and DVD and a log burner. The kitchen, once the 'cave' looks onto the back garden and pool. The patio doors open onto a side patio that offers good shade in the afternoon and evening. The ground floor rooms are all tiled and the thick stone walls keep the house cool in summer.
The back garden was until very recently a field, and we have planted many trees and bushes, but until they grow and offer shade we have umbrellas and gazebos. The pool has a safety perimeter fence, the depth is a comfortable 1.2 to 1.6 - most can keep their head above water. The roman steps give a cool place to sit in and out of the water. The pool is normally available from May to September, depending on the weather.
We are able to offer clients a discount with Brittany Ferries, please apply. |
