Petit Bissac is situated between the villages of Plumelec and Tredion. The village of Plumelec has its own butchers, bakery, pharmacy, garage, post office and grocery store. A short drive away is the larger village of Elven, with a bigger "Intermarche" (supermarket).
The area is popular with cyclists and walkers. In nearby Tredion, there is the beautiful "Chateau de Tredion" and parc, with resident deer. The local "Auberge de Biches" is also worth a visit, offering a tasty meal, overlooking its own lake.
In the small hamlet of Callac, close to the cottage, you will find a picturesque holy "grotto" sunk into the rockface, which locals visit to light candles and say prayers. Climbing up from the grotto is the "Chemin de Croix", a depiction of the Stations of the Cross which look down over an old sixteenth century chapel - well worth a visit, if only for the calm and tranquility of the moment. The "Auberge de Moulin de Callac" is another of the local eating establishments.
The cottage is centrally located for visiting the many delights of South Brittany which include:
Vannes - an old city built in the shape of an amphitheatre at the head of the Gulfe du Morbihan, enclosed in its ramparts and grouped around the cathedral. It has a pedestrian zone, elegant shops and old half-timbered town houses. The markets on Wednesday and Saturday are worth a visit.
Josselin - a small town on the River Oust, with a Chateau and old houses with slate roofs nestling behind the fortress-castle, on the sides and the summit of a steep ridge.
Auray - an ancient town on the banks of the River Auray, with attractive harbour in the old St Goustan Quarter in close proximity to the marvellous Gulfe du Morbihan.
Rochefort-en-Terre - a charming old town set in a landscape of rocks, woods, ravines, orchards and old houses bright with geraniums which attract many painters
Belle-Ile - the largest of the Breton Islands, with numerous valleys cut deeply into the high rocks, finishing up as beaches and harbours, with wheat fields alternating with patches of gorse and whitewashed houses standing in lush fields. Belle-Ile is for lovers of long walks and horseback riding.
Petit Bissac offers cosy and comfortable accommodation - whether you are looking for a base from which to explore the many delights of South Brittany or simply a cosy hideaway from all the stresses and strains of everyday living. |
