Italy > Tuscany > Lunigiana > Irola
The Lunigiana is located in the northernmost part of Tuscany, flanked by Liguria and Emilia Romagna, between the river Magra and its tributaries. The region is characterized by hills and green valleys set against the backdrop of the Apennines and the Alpi Apuane (Apuan Alps), with the sea visible in the distance.
Thanks to its geographical position, the Lunigiana is very easy to reach. It is less than two hours away from Milan and Florence, and just one hour away from Genoa, Pisa and Lucca and the various international airports served by various low cost airlines. The sun-kissed Lunigiana has a mild climate and a gentle, relaxing atmosphere which invites visitors to take long, leisurely walks along the trekking paths in the woods filled with mushrooms, wild fruits, olive trees, chestnuts, oaks and pines, crossed by small crystal clear streams filled with fish. In these woods it is not unusual to come across roe deer, wild boar, squirrels and hawks. During the summer months, the beaches of Versilia and the Cinque Terre are just forty minutes away, whilst in the winter, the runs on the snow-capped Apennines offer excellent skiing.
Visitors to the Lunigiana can discover the region’s charming ancient traditions and culture and savor unique culinary offerings, cheeses, salamis and cured pork products, typical local wines and dishes such as “panigacci” (a flat bread), “focaccette” (a hearth bread) and “testaroli” (a type of boiled pancake). |
