For the nearest beach, go out the gate, turn left, and carry on down the road that veers to the right. Follow this until you go under a bridge and the road veers to the left. Continue until you come to a built-up area and look for a sign saying Hotel Apollo and turn right. Keep following the same sign and it will take you to the beach. Snacks and drinks are available on the beach.
On the way back from the beach, instead of turning left for home at the main road, turn right and this will take you to the Port of Epidavros, where you will find various shops, including a Butchers, a Post Office and a Bank.
Hotel Christinas is a great place for an English breakfast and to sip on your favourite tipple and watch the world go by of an evening, while enjoying good home cooking.
There are 2 nice restaurants in the village – ‘Perivoli’ is a family run restaurant with a great variety of dishes. The other one is called ‘Mikes’ which is right on the waterfront of the Port, and has a great amount of fish dishes. (Be warned – The fish is expensive).
On Friday mornings there is an Open Air Market in the village of Ligourio – Turn right out of the gate and follow the road to the T Junction. Turn left and go up through the High Street. After about 50 metres take a turning to the right, where you will find the market. Everything is fresh that day! Also in this village is the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros, where all the top actors and actresses perform, during the months of July and August.
Right next to this is the Museum known as Temple of Ascleplus, God of Medicine. There is a Post office, Bank, Pharmacy, Health Centre, Bakers, Supermarkets and Restaurants. One restaurant in particular is called ‘Oasis’, run by Father and Son and here you can just sit down and eat chops, chops and more chops with chips and salad, and a very good house wine! In the same direction as Oasis, carry on and you will see a sign for Candia on your left. Follow this sign and you will arrive at the beach where they have waves, unlike the other beach, which is similar to a milk pond.
Another beach is ‘Tolo’ – When you comeback to the main road, turn left and carry on for 4-5 miles. You will come to a junction where you have the right of way and here you turn left. By the petrol station, follow the sign to Tolo, which is a real sandy beach. This is a great favourite with families and lovers of water sports. There are also lots of shops and restaurants.
Here at the end of the village you can get tours to the other islands, which incidentally can also be done at the Port of Epidavros. Each tour takes up to a day of your time but is definitely worth doing! Nafplio is the nearest major town to you, which was the capital of Greece before Athens. It is a very charming Venetian Port, taken back from the Turks in 1822. The Turks built a massive fort on the hill and it is worth taking time to view this from inside and out. It is well lit up in the evening and there are lots of restaurants, boutiques, Jewellers and Souvenir shops. |
