Languedoc-Rousillon, Aigues Mortes, and the Camargue
Aigues Mortes is in the Gard department of Languedoc. It is a jewel of a medieval city, preserved intact and with an amazing history. The city is enclosed within square walls which provide a framework for the grid like streets enclosed within it. Aigues Mortes has some excellent restaurants, bars and boutiques. It is the essence of relaxed living and provides a chance to sample local produce. The Camargue produces excellent beef, duck, seafood and fish, and a mouth watering variety of vegetables and fruit, all of which can be sampled in the local restaurants. The region has some excellent wines that are easily available, or you can visit the vineyards around Corbieres and Narbonnes.
The Camargue is a national park, and home to the famous white horses of the area, black bulls and flamingos. There is a stunning variety of wildlife to see. Trekking, water cruises and safaris are available to take advantage of the park and see the wildlife within it. The beaches in the area are unspoilt and stretch for kilometres with no development, and pristine forest behind the dunes. There are a number of beautiful villages and marinas to visit, and some of the finest seafood in France available from the nearby lagoons, famous for oysters and mussels.
Arles, Nimes, Montpellier, Avignon, Marseille are all nearby and within easy reach, as are Carcassone, Sete and Agde. You can visit Greco-Roman remains; shop in some of the best districts in France; visit the local art galleries; eat the fresh seafood by the Mediterranean; drink some of the excellent regional wines in France such as Chateau Neuf du Pape; see the medieval history of Europe in Avignon at the Palace of the Popes; experience Cathar country and the hill villages or wander the seaside towns of Sete, Agde or the Camargue. Languedoc is the province that covers medieval l’Occitanne. Discover for yourself what makes l’Occitanne special and unspoilt. Rousillon is French catalan, which has left traces of the Sardana, bullfights and paella. Activities
The main attraction to the area is the Camargue itself. Boats can be hired to tour the waterways in the Camargue or the famous Canal du Midi. Bikes and horse trekking are also available. There are excellent nearby tennis courts, winds surfing, sailing schools, safaris and walking tours. The Mediterranean beaches offer a chance to swim, or simply relax and sunbathe.
Airports
Marseille international airport is the largest airport with excellent links. Although alternatives exist at Montpellier, Nice or Lyon airports. Smaller regional airports are located at Nimes, Carcassone and Perpignan. Car hire is available at the airports.
Train Stations
Aigues Mortes train station is about 10 minutes walk from the house and is easily accessible. The TGV runs to Montpellier and Beziers.
Bus & Coach Station
The terminal is next to the train station and within easy walking distance of the house, or again, a short taxi ride if carrying luggage.
