The Turkish Mediterranean coast
The Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey is one of the most visually stunning in Europe. Inland you can enjoy the wonderful scenery of the forests and and explore pretty villages where time stands still. The whole of this area is steeped in history through the many civilisations that have come and gone. Lycian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman have all left their mark with many splendid ruins and historic sites within easy within reach of Kalkan. Kalkan has a lovely clean pebble beach and close by are two of Turkey's finest sandy beaches at Patara and Kaputas.
Kalkan Town
KALKAN is special! This beautiful and sophisticated harbour village is set in a breathtaking landscape in the heart of the old Lycian region. It has a wonderfully relaxed and laid back atmosphere and strict conservation laws ensure that the old village retains its history, character and charm. Winding cobbled streets, colourful local shops, bars and excellent terrace and roof top restaurants all combine with stunning views over the Mediterranean. Kalkan has a beautiful pebble beach and there are also two other superb sandy beaches close by at Patara (20 minute bus journey) and Kaputas (5 minute bus journey). Patara is protected from development and has been consistently voted as being amongst the best beaches in the world!
Kalkan has small supermarkets (offering a free delivery service) and shops where you can get a wide range of provisions. The general cost of living is very reasonable and prices are low in comparison to the UK. Leather goods, carpets, clothing and jewellery are particularly good value. There is also a bank with an ATM machine and a post office and several shops offering money exchange at competitive rates. Kalkan also has a pharmacy, dentist and a doctors surgery. There is an excellent local market every Thursday .
Local activities include: White water rafting, jeep safaris, canoeing, diving, fishing, walking (although Kalkan is very hilly!), water sports and boat trips. There are several famous historic sites in the area. For a step back in time go inland into the mountains and pine forests and enjoy a fabulous meal at one of the local trout farm restaurants.
How to get there?
Flights to Dalaman operate from all major UK airports. You can book flights over the Internet on several websites such as Aegean Flights or Cheap Flights We can advise further if required.
Transfers can be arranged for you. For 1-3 people this service will cost £80.00 return, for 4-6 people £120.00 return. The transfer is relaxing and scenic and takes around 80 minutes. All vehicles are air conditioned.
