Turkey > Aegean Region > Bodrum > Gundogan
The secluded bay of Kucukbuk is 10 mins walk away, here there are a few small bars/restaurants and small hotels/pensions. At night the jetties and beach are set with tables and candles providing a truly unique dining experience in the 'Shirley Valentine' sense. You can enjoy oysters prepared for you to eat as you stroll along the beach deciding what and where you will eat. Little English is spoken here, and your efforts to speak Turkish will be rewarded with huge grins. On breezy evenings you will be offered wraps to keep you warm. Nearby Gundogan is a little larger, boasting many fine restaurants, serving Turkish and International cuisine, you will NOT get "fish and chips and English breakfast" here.
There are a variety of water sports available here and the small harbour has sailing boats for hire and Gulets for trips to surrounding islands and secluded bays that are plentiful on the peninsula.
Gundogan is a mix of old and new. Passing a cow being guided home by the lady of the house is a common sight. 30mins drive brings you to Bodrum with its stunning marina guarded by the Castle of St peter, the large commercial port is where you will pick up the Ferry to the Greek island of Kos, a great day trip. There are many other trips available from here: there is a water park and go karking for you to enjoy here.
2hrs drive will take you to Didim where the ancient Temple of Appollo can be found, 3/4 hrs drive takes you to the Ancient wonder of the world Ephesus, the salt deposits of Pamukkale is the same drive, this can be done as a tour or on your own. The delightful fishing village of Gumushluk must not be missed by fish (balik) lovers, the choice is amazing and makes it hard to choose which one.
In the high season there are many sailing boats moored off and the occupants spill out and go to the restaurants hoping that the last port of call will ferry them in their dingy back to their boat if they have enjoyed too much local Raki (aniseed).
A few minutes drive brings you to the 'Limon', here you will experience an unforgettable sunset over nearby Rabbit Island. The low seating goes all the way down the slopes towards the sea, crystals, glitter in the ancient Olive trees swaying in the breeze, food is served here but booking is advisable.
Turgetreis Saturday market is amazing, made up of many sections, the fruit and veg gleams in the bright sunlight, buff to a high gloss, there are many varied stall, clothes, shoes, spices, sweet, nuts, curtains, carpets, rugs, jewellery and much more, you could enjoy a whole day here, then amble to the Anatolia Restaurant on the beach nearby and experience lamb and chicken roasted in pit, and served to by waiter dressed in traditional Anatolian dress, there are no tables and chairs, your party will be seated in a traditional Koch (Turkish Cabana) with low seating, cushions and rugs, a truly unforgettable experience. |
