The county of Somerset is situated in the south west of England and because it is close to the Atlantic ocean the weather remains pretty reasonable throughout the year. Along with offering good weather Somerset County offers visitors to it a wide array of attractions for them to enjoy. As you will soon discover there is something for people of all different age groups to enjoy when they spend time in this beautiful English county.
For those visitors are who interested in learning more about the Somerset county’s history then taking time out to explore places like Glastonbury Tor, Wells and Dunster Castle should be considered. Whereas if you want to have a little more fun during your stay visits to the likes of the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge and Caves.
Cheddar Gorge is an attraction in Somerset that has had visitors flocking to it for many centuries now. From the public roads that run through it one is able to view the highest inland cliffs in England. Plus if you aren’t afraid of heights then take a walk along one of the footpaths that are to be found on the Gorge’s cliff tops.
However, the place that many people will aim for when visiting this part of Somerset is the Cheddar Caves. As well as going on guided tours to learn about their history and how they were created. Whilst for those who are a little more adventurous if they want they can have a go at caving or at rock climbing or abseiling if they wish.
Plus after completing the guided tour of the caves you can then spend time learning how cheddar cheese is made at the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company store. Whereas for those with a more sweet rather than savoury tooth a visit to the Cheddar Sweet Kitchen should be included during your time at this particular Somerset County attraction.
For those who would like to have spectacular views over Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire then spending time at Glastonbury Tor should be included in your visit to this English County. Excavations have been carried out at this site and revealed plans of 2 churches dedicated to St Michael and the tower that is found here dates back to the 15th Century.
However if you are in Somerset during the month of July this may be an attraction to avoid because in the Town below the Glastonbury Festival takes place. Because of this hundreds of thousands of additional visitors come to the area to enjoy the various groups that perform during the five days that the festival is on.
One final place worth considering spending time in when visiting Somerset County is Exmoor. This is classified as a National Park and not only comes with a wonderful landscape for you to enjoy, but a myriad of different animals to see. The most famous residents of this area of the county being the Red Deer and the Exmoor Ponies. Here you can really get away from the hustle and bustle of modern living and relax and unwind whilst on holiday.
