England > Cumbria > Eskdale
Eskdale is one of the Lake District's loveliest, and sunniest, valleys. Although it has no lake itself, nearby Wastwater Lake (5 miles) has what was recently voted the most beautiful view in England. The Ravenglass and Eskdale miniature railway trundles up the valley, and we have our own station! (Fisherground Halt). The roads can be challenging -Hard Knot pass at the head of the valley is 1 in 3, but there are easy ways in too, from Broughton in Furness and Whitehaven. Also in the valley are historical sites from 3000 BC stone circles, to the Roman Fort on Hard Knott Pass, through the 12th century magnificent Muncaster Castle, to the only working water powered corn mill in the Lake District, in Boot village.

Eskdale is the loveliest of the Lake District's valleys, offering peace and tranquillity, plus many attractions such as Muncaster Castle and the seven mile miniature railway, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. (We have our own station!)
This is walkers’ country, with hundreds of valley, riverside and mountain walks. Five good pubs in the valley serve good food and welcome children and pets. It is also a treasure trove of history, with stone circles from 3000 BC, Hard Knott Roman fort, Ravenglass Roman settlement and bath-house, old iron-ore workings and quarries, Viking crosses and many other fascinations. And if you want the rest of the Lake District attractions, they are all within an hour’s drive. A dozen lakes, all sorts of water sports, scores of National Trust properties, the legend of Beatrix Potter, William Wordsworth and the Lakes poets. |
