There are plenty of different styles of holiday homes in Kefallonia, which one can rent for your vacation. This is because it is one of the largest of all the Islands that make up Greece and the name itself when translated into English means "Island with a Head". Certainly if you were to go into space, you will see why it means what it does.
Of all the Islands that make up the Greek ones this is one of the most popular with tourists from around the world. Along with some of the most beautiful and unspoilt villages you are likely to see the Island of Kefallonia sports some of the most beautiful beaches as well.
But if you want there is so much more one can do and attractions that one can visit when staying on Kefallonia. In this article, we look at some of the kinds of attractions that you may be interested in visiting when staying on this island on your next vacation.
1. The Cave of Drogarati - This is one of the oldest (150 million years) and largest stalagmatic caves to be found. Many people visit it simply to spend time 150 feet below ground in the "Concert Cave" which is renowned for having superb acoustic qualities and can comfortably hold 500 people inside it.
2. The Church of Saint Gerasimos - This particular church is located near to the village of Lassi and is built out of a natural cave. Saint Gerassimos after who the church is named was believed to have lived here until he moved to the Omala Valley in order to reorganize the monastery (Agios Gerassimos) that was located in it.
3. The Kefallonia Archaeological Museum - This museum is located in the town of Argostoli and contains many artefacts and antiquities that have been discovered on the island. It covers the islands history from pre-historic times through to the period when the Romans were living on it.
4. Agios Andreas Monastery - This is one of the few buildings that remained standing as part of the Katholikon Nunnery after a huge earthquake that occurred on the Island back in 1953. It has become even more popular as a tourist attraction since 1988 after the holy remains (the right foot (sole)) of the Apostle Andrew is now kept in the museum, which is part of this attraction.
As you can see, there is plenty for one to do on this island and you do not need to spend all your time relaxing by the poolside at one of the many holiday homes in Kefallonia. What you may discover, however, is that you may need to return to the island several times in order to truly appreciate and enjoy what it has to offer.
