Holiday Villas in Lagos, Algarve, Portugal
Date: 15 July 2008
Even though Lagos, Algarve has become a very important tourist destination in recent years in Portugal it still retains a lot of its history as well. Today one can wander its streets and take in many of its wonderful buildings one of which dates back to 1445. The town itself is situated at the mouth of the River Bensafrim and is situated in the Southern part of the Algarve.

The town has many wonderful beaches and which are considered to be some of the most beautiful in this part of Portugal. However, to get some like Praia de Dona Ana is not easy and will take you about 25 minutes to walk from the center of the town to it.

The advantage of renting holiday villas in Lagos is that many villas will have their own private pool, garden and parking facilities.  Also you have much more privacy and freedom to treat it like a home from home.

Although if you don’t feel like walking you could always get a taxi or hop on one of the local buses. Further along the same stretch of coastline you will find the beaches of Praia do Comilo and Meia Praia. The last one having sands which stretch for a total of 4km so finding a space to relax should not be a problem. But Meia Praia is not just for relaxing on, there are plenty of water sports that one can have a go at. Plus on a small sand bar there is the Meia Praia Fort which was built as a defense for Lagos Bay during the 17th and 18th Centuries.

However, although these beaches are well liked the area where most tourists tend to congregate during the summer months is at Ponta da Piedade. The reason for this is that the beach is in Lagos Bay and so is sheltered from the winds coming off the Atlantic Ocean. Certainly there are plenty of things for one to do and see when you visit this part of Lagos as the waters are clear and you can admire the caves and rocks that surround it.

Although most people come to spend time relaxing on the beaches in Lagos there are plenty of other things for one to do and see during your holiday here. Certainly during the 15th and 16th Centuries this town was a very important naval center and its was from here that many explorers set out to seek the new worlds. It was also the Algarve’s capital from 1576 until 1756.

However, many of the buildings that were erected when the Arabs came and throughout its history was badly damaged during the earthquake that hit the town in 1755. Much of the architecture you see in the town today is that built during the 18th and 19th Centuries.

As you wander around the streets of Lagos, Algarve you will come across some very interesting statutes depicting famous people from the towns past. Certainly, the most controversial of all of these is the one dedicated to Dom Sebastio and which is to be found in the town’s main square directly in front of the Town Hall.

When it comes to renting a holiday villa in the Algarve any time of year is acceptable as the weather is generally good all year round. However, the summer months do tend to be the busiest so it is advisable to book your holiday well in advance of your dates to ensure that you get the accommodation that you want.  One of our featured properties in the Algarve is Apartmento Boa Vista.
