Of all the countries in South East Asia which are proving to be popular with tourists from around the world is Thailand. Not only does it have some of the most beautiful scenery in this part of the world but also some truly magnificent beaches. But it is not only these which attract its visitors it is the people and their history including their wonder temples that draw people in.
In this article we provide you with some very interesting facts regarding this wonderful country and which is just some of the reasons why people tend to holiday in Thailand time and time again. Certainly Thailand is not only a country steeped in thousands of years of history but is a place where one can truly relax and forget about all the worries that modern day living place upon us.
Fact 1 – This country is often referred to as the “Land of Smiles” because everywhere you go the people of Thailand smile and are very friendly towards those they consider to be their guests. In fact the people of Thailand are considered to be among the most friendly and hospitable of people in the world today.
Fact 2 – Originally the country was known as Siam but this changed under official proclamation in 1949 to Thailand. The word “Thai” when translated into England means “Freedom” and so the name when translated to English means either “Land of Freedom” or “Land Of The Free”.
Fact 3 – Because this nation has never been colonized unlike the rest of South East Asia it has been able to retain its own culture. The culture is Thailand is similar to that to be found in Cambodia and adopted by Thais in the 13th Century following the fall of the Khmer Kingdom.
Fact 4 – Bangkok was established as the country’s capital in 1782 by the then King of the Chakri Dynasty King Rama I. Although the country’s current king is Bhumibol Adulyadej because he is a member of the Chakri Dynasty he is also known as Rama IX and is currently the longest serving monarch in Thai history.
Fact 5 – When you visit Thailand you need to be aware of certain customs and one of these is that you must never touch another person on the head. This is because this is where Thai people believe a person’s soul resides and is extremely sacred to them.
Fact 6 – In Thailand there are five UNESCO World Heritage sites that one can visit during your holiday there. These include the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site close to Udon Thani, the Dong Phayayen Khao Yai Forest Complex, the historic towns of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai and the Thungyai Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary.
