Several Caribbean islands are currently on hurricane alert after a storm lashed Barbados, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago at the weekend, which are all popular tourist destinations, especially at this time of year. Depending on the path that the hurricane takes, Hurricane Tomas could now hit Jamaica, eastern Cuba or the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where more than a million survivors of last January's earthquake are still living in tented camps.
Airports in Barbados and St Lucia were also forced to close at the weekend when the islands were hit by Tomas. Some flights across the Caribbean have been cancelled. The storm has lost some of its power, but the US National Hurricane Centre has warned that it could gather more force as it sweeps across the region.
Always check for recent updates before you travel, if you have booked to visit any of these destinations and also consult with your travel operator if you have any questions or concerns.
