June has been reported as one of the wettest June’s on record in Britain. The average rainfall across England was 140mm, which was more than double the June average. Some areas of the country received a months worth of rain in just 24hours.
Widespread flooding has occurred as a result of the torrential rain with the most severe flooding being in Northern Ireland, North Yorkshire and The Midlands. According to the BBC the reason for the recent wet weather has been the Jet Stream. Strong winds have steered a series of low pressure systems unusually far-south for this time of year. Normally they would have hit Iceland, instead they have cruised across the UK depositing plenty of rain. As a result of this the Azores High has been kept at bay.
Fingers crossed that the Jet Stream heads back north otherwise we may have to get used to more of the same.
