A holiday in England offers you the chance to explore some extremely fascinating places. But not only are you restricted to exploring this country’s history by visiting such locations as Stonehenge, you also have the chance to explore some of its more modern structures such as the London Eye.
Certainly when it comes to holidaying in England you may well discover that several visits are required in order to truly explore all that this wonderful country has to offer. Below we look at some of the places which are worth considering a visit during your next vacation in England.
Stonehenge is a well known edifice in England and is situated close to the town of Salisbury in the county of Wiltshire. Still after many years of research no one is sure just why Stonehenge was built although many believe it was for the purpose of religious celebrations. A great site to visit but unfortunately it is not something that you are able to really get close to.
Whilst not very far away from Stonehenge is the village of Avebury and here there is a large stone circle surrounding the village. But whereas with Stonehenge there are cordons which keep you at a distance at Avebury you have the opportunity to walk right up to the stones that stand guard around the village and touch them if you wish.
Further south is the hugely popular area of Cornwall which is still an attraction not only for international tourists but also people from around the United Kingdom. There are many attractions which are suitable for children, along with a number of holiday cottages in Cornwall which are ideal for children as they can have their own rooms.
Another place of interest but which is located further to the north in England is Durham Cathedral and just like Stonehenge has obtained the status of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This cathedral was founded in 1093AD and is where the shrine of the 7th Century Saint Cuthbert, Lindisfarne is located. Plus also located within its sacred grounds are the remains of Venerable Bede. Also for those who really want to get a view of the whole city of Durham then climbing the 325 steps in its tower should be considered.
Also while visiting Durham why not consider travelling a little further to take in the views of the Humber Bridge. This is the fifth largest single span suspension bridge to be found in the world today and located close to the town of Kingston Upon Hull. The bridge measures a total of 7,283 feet and the central span is 4,626 feet in length.
However, if you prefer to spend some of your holiday in England in London its capital, then there are a large range of wonderful sights to visit and enjoy during your time in the city. Of course one place that most people venture to is the Tower of London. Situated on the North Bank of the Thames it can be easily be reached either by walking, bus, and taxi or by underground train.
Originally constructed as Royal Palace but it also acted as a fortress and prison in which the countries prisons of royal blood or of a high status were kept. During its time also the Tower of London in England has housed a zoo, it is where the Crown Jewels of England can be viewed as well as being home to the Royal Mint for a period of time. But now is one of the most popular of all the tourist attractions in England today. The capital city offers a number of holiday apartments which can also be great for business purposes.
