There are plenty of things when visiting Greece and its islands that tourists will be able to enjoy during their time there. But it isn’t just the myriad of historic sites and buildings one can spend time exploring, there are numerous events that take place throughout the year.
In this article we take a look at the kinds of places one can visit during a holiday in Greece and the kinds of events that take place throughout the year. Two places which are very popular with tourists from around the world and Delphi and Olympia.
Delphi is situated at the foot of Mount Parnassos and during ancient times was regarded by Greeks as the center of the world. This world famous archaeological site is situated in some truly spectacular landscape and for many centuries was the very heart of this country’s cultural and religious being.
As for Olympia this is to be found in the valley of the Alpheios River and is the most well known of all the sanctuary’s to be found in this country. Of course as well as being the most important religious centre in Greece it is home to the original athletic games that we known as the Olympics today. Originally the Olympic games were used as a way of honoring Zeus who was overall leader of the ancient Greek gods and goddesses, where as today they are used as a way of bringing different countries together.
Along with people making visits to Delphi and Olympia other places that are regularly visited by tourists to this wonderful country are Delos, Mystras a medieval city, Patmos, the Cave of the Apocalypse and the medieval city of Rhodes and Corfu’s old town.
However as well as such wonderful ancient sites to visit throughout the year numerous events and festivals take place. All of these allow visitors a chance to learn more about this country’s customs and about its folklores. But the most important events tend to take place during the summer months and are held as part of the Hellenic Festivals.
Generally the best time to visit is between Easter and Mid June as this is when the beaches and all the sights that you can visit tend to be the least crowded. Also you will often find that the price of holiday homes in Greece during these times of the year tend to be much cheaper than if you visit during the height of the summer season which takes place between mid June and the end of August.
However although you can visit Greece during the winter months be aware that it is only the major towns and cities will there be things to do and see. Generally what you will find with the much smaller towns and villages is that they close from the middle of October until the beginning of April. Also if you intend to take a trip during the latter part of the year take some warm clothing with you although in the Mediterranean the temperatures can plummet quite dramatically.
